A couple of fixes and improvements in this new release.

  • fix enemies being highlighted when you mouse over a non-visible tile.
  • fix problem where graphics stop displaying when you resize the game window too large.
  • improved creature generation, so weaker ones won't appear in the later levels.
  • added image icons to the inventory, making it much easier to tell items apart.

Ah yes, this totally makes sense now!
The game has a resolution limit. I think it's something like 35 x 30 tiles, which is about 1120 x 960. Anything bigger than that will stuff the game up. Dam I knew this would happen one day.

Thank you very much.
I will find a way to fix it, so it will always let you play regardless of screen resolution.

Re: Game doesn't work. by twirltwirl, 24 Sep 2009 22:00

Oh boy…. I got it to work!

I figured out what it was… when the game's screen was maximized it wouldn't work, yet if I shrink it down it does…

Thank you for your help anyway.

(Just so you know, my resolution is 1680 x 1050, quite a weird res, I've had trouble with it before.)

Re: Game doesn't work. by Battleguy (guest), 24 Sep 2009 20:48

Okay… I got a hell of a lot of text out of that prompt, I doubt you'll need it all (I think one of those messages would come up everytime I waved my cursor over where the tiles should be).

Oh and I quite sure I'm just running Windows XP 32 bit, no Virtual PC or anything like that.

Re: Game doesn't work. by Battleguy (guest), 24 Sep 2009 20:42

LOL, I definitely have not seen this before!
The menus from the menu bar are removed. The dungeon window is black and the hotspot panel is still showing tile information. So the game itself is running, but the display seems messed up.

I am wondering if there are some java exceptions getting thrown, they would help in figuring out what's wrong. I think you should have java.exe somewhere on your machine. If you don't mind, can you please try running the game from the command prompt like this:

java -jar "dimension dungeon.jar"

Then copy paste what the output is here after you click "Quick Start Game", and also when you get the black screen.

Also, the machine that you're running this on, is there anything out of the ordinary with the operating system? Like, are you running Windows XP in an emulator like Virtual PC, or are you using Windows XP 64 bit?
I have tested on Windows XP, 2000, Vista Home and Vista Business (all 32 bit) and they all work.

Thanks for posting screenshots. Very helpful indeed.

After I click quick start.

After I saved that screenshot from before it did this.

I have the latest version of Java.

Boy… I can't get anything to work for me recently. :D

Re: Game doesn't work. by Battleguy (guest), 23 Sep 2009 21:49

Thanks for replying.

Darn this problem you have is pretty bizarre.
When you go Quick Start, it should just start the game immediately. Did you try Quick Start right from the start (without pressing any keys)?

When you say "playing behind the scenes", do you mean the white startup screen is still showing?

What version of java do you have installed? I developed DD on java 1.6, so I think you need to have 1.6 at least for it to run properly.

I'm going to try this on a few other computers and see if I can reproduce this issue in the mean time.

I'll post back here when I have any new ideas.

Re: Game doesn't work. by twirltwirl, 23 Sep 2009 08:53

Okay…

This problem happens all the times, I've yet to play the game because of it. Which is a shame because I really want to.
I get to "[ Press any key to continue ]", and then after pressing a key that's when it freezes.
I'm using Windows XP

And I'll try the Quick Start thing right now… Okay tried it, now it's like the game is playing behind the scenes, and the menus open up and such, but I can't see anything.

Hope this helps.

Hey Battleguy.
You are the first person to post something here! For a while, I was wondering whether anyone out there has even downloaded DD!

Anyways, does this problem happen all the time? Or only some of the time?
Do you get to the bit where it says "[ Press any key to continue ]"?
Are you using windows, linux or mac?
(sorry for so many questions, gotta know this stuff to fix)

If this happens all the time and you are using a linux or mac, then this would be the newline problem. Since I developed this game in windows, only pressing newline in windows would work here. I have yet to figure out how to do this in linux and mac.

If that is the case, then you can start the game alternatively by going File=>Quick Start Game (menu at top), which will start the game immediately. The only difference is you can't enter your characters name.

If this only happens some of the time, then that'll mean something in the code when starting the game is screwed up and I'll have to take a look at stuff. Hopefully this isn't the problem…

Hi…

Okay, so I start the game and after entering my name, and then pressing any key to continue the game screen just freezes, and I have to close it.

Do you know what would be my problem.

Here are the latest changes for this release.

  • Mouse cursor for special abilities will turn blue.
  • Holding down the mouse button will now move the character.
  • You can now use the numpad keys to move the character.
  • Using the keyboard to move will now update the mouse cursor on screen to face the correct direction.
  • Double clicking potions and food in the inventory will now perform the desired actions (eat, drink/throw).
  • Added enemy state effects to hotspot panel.
  • A property file is saved after you exit the game to store things: last directory where you saved the game and window size/position.
  • Autocentering of the character. This will keep the character in the middle of the dungeon view at all times. To activate/deactivate this, go to the "View" menu and click "Autocenter".
  • The sub types of armour generated will be more even now (so there will be an even number of leggings, cloaks, shields etc).
  • There is a bit more variety in terrain features generated.
  • Fixed a few abilities that didn't work.
  • You now cannot travel stairs if there are enemies around that are engaged in combat with the player.

Item generation by twirltwirl, 29 Aug 2009 02:01

Added descriptions to hero abilities, inventory items and terrain.
The hero ability and terrain descriptions appear in the hotspot panel (on the top right) when you move your mouse over them.
And inventory item descriptions appear when you click on them in the inventory.

Also fixed a bug where some abilities activate twice after clicking on a target, like the four-hit combo.
There are more bugs expected around using abilities too, please log them in the bug forum!

Version 0.51 released by twirltwirl, 20 May 2009 09:50

Quite a number of changes in this version.

  • New in game dialog screens that appear after specific moments of the game.
  • The game log window kept jumping to the top, so you couldn't see the new events appearing. This has been fixed so it scrolls down properly.
  • Application of stat modifiers were quite messed up, for example when an enemy walked off a cloud tile, the bonus +2 agility would remain. This has been fixed.
  • Alot of abilities that used stat modifiers have been fixed.
  • Ranged cursors (like for throwing pots, targetting for abilities) now scroll properly when you move them to the edge of the game window.
  • Current statistics panel in the Base Statistics window now updates.

Something quite major that needs to be put in are descriptions for the abilities. At the moment, there's no way of telling what an ability does, unless you actually use them. Even then, you still would have trouble knowing what they do exactly. These descriptions will be added in the next update.

Version 0.5 released by twirltwirl, 09 May 2009 02:07

This release is mainly to fix a major bug in 0.4 where you couldn't advance beyond dungeon level 1, because no stairs were being generated, so you were always stuck on the first dungeon level.

There are also a number of other changes:

  • The general skills have been moved into the Train Abilities window from the Upgrade Stats window
  • Fix the Shadow Winds skill not doing anything
  • Fix bug where sometimes the game can't start, because the hero character fails to get placed into the map
